Panel "Writing as a Revolutionary Act in this Increasingly Extreme World:
Description: In a world where book bans are a thing, and people are actively discouraged from both expressing themselves and communicating their messages, the act of putting pen-to-paper, or fingers-to-keyboard becomes a revolutionary act! Where once we had the freedom to publish what we needed to say, we now face the specter of book bans and whole communities are finding their written histories are being erased! Are writers the new “Underground Resistance Movement” in an increasingly homogenized world?

Author Reading: J.F. McDermott "Go Fast Go Faster. An Adevocate's Journey"
Description: Go Fast Go Faster is a tender, funny, and deeply moving story of a father’s love for his daughter, and how together, they continue to triumph over tragedy. In November of 1995, birth trauma left James McDermott’s daughter Mariel profoundly brain injured, physically disabled, and unable to care for herself. This event started him on a journey of love and compassion for her and others who face similar challenges. Determined to create a meaningful and empowered life for his beautiful daughter, he stood bravely in the face of people and systems that devalued her and others like her. Using humour and positivity to cope through hard times, James dedicated himself to improving the lives of people with developmental disabilities, fighting for both their inclusion and their health. In 2017, he invented the CareChanger, a device he built for his daughter that will revolutionize personal care for wheelchair users. In this book, James honours both his adventures with Mariel ...and the many people who have touched her life through their compassion and care. We also get to meet the Glorious Golfers, a wonderful story about friendship, overcoming adversity and being inspired by inclusion.

Workshop: "Looking for the Words"
Description: That is what writers are doing all the time; finding the right words to describe, to tell the story, to convey the emotion and so much more. Perhaps because I turned back to poetry after writing short stories and feature articles for magazines, much of my poetry tends to build on narrative which in turn often tries to paint a picture – within the frame of which more can sometimes be found.
This presentation draws on my experience of working with images created by artists and photographers which began with my very first collection of poems and has continued ever since. Over time I have collaborated with thirty different image makers – something I am aware is not the way that most poets have worked.

Workshop "Accessing Your Creativity Through the Power of Words"
Description: Come and explore how and why words work. Connect with their power through writing, and go home with a newly created character who is uniquely yours.
This workshop starts with a few minutes of body awareness meditation. You will then use all of your senses to examine a natural object. Writing freely, you will let the words guide you. Examining the nature of your words’ energies will give you tools so that, returning to your object, you can use it to create a character that is uniquely yours. (Natural objects will be provided.)
